CPT® International News: New COVID-19 vaccine code, virtual events, announcements, and more
The AMA has created a free online resource to support selecting the appropriate CPT code combination for the specific COVID-19 vaccine. The new COVID-19 CPT vaccine codes support the tracking needs by identifying two code groups – the vaccine product and administration. The CPT® Editorial Panel continues to release new COVID-19 vaccine codes that are distinct to each coronavirus vaccine and the specific dose.
The CPT code set has been updated by the CPT Editorial Panel to include vaccine and administration codes that are unique to the COVID-19 vaccine candidate under development by Janssen Pharmaceutica, a division of Johnson & Johnson.
AAPC announced an international distribution agreement with the American Medical Association (AMA) that will facilitate access and adoption of the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) content for global users.

CPT IN THE NEWS
The CPT® code set supports the expansion of telehealth services in the Gulf Region
“We had to get the right digital frameworks in place so that we can ensure the quality of telehealth platforms, the flow of reimbursement processes, and also address privacy and security when using those platforms,” according to Dr. Osama Elhassan, co-founder and the vice-chair of Emirates Health Informatics Society and Health Informatics Specialist at Dubai Health Authority. He shared his views in a recent article published in the Gulf News that profiles the growth of telehealth services in the Gulf Region and includes how CPT content supports it.
The CPT code set currently includes 70 telehealth-related codes and content describing comprehensive telehealth delivery solutions to support clinical interoperability and reimbursement for these remote care services.
Key opinion leader advocates for CPT code set adoption in Canada in Policy Options
“A significant barrier to our health system’s ability to keep up with the pace of technological and medical innovation is the outdated coding system that medical professionals use to document procedures and other patient services,” stated Dr. Jia Hu, a medical officer of health for Alberta Health Services, Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary and Board Member for Partners in Health Canada, and the Treasurer and Executive Member for Public Health Physicians of Canada.
