CPT® International News updates on the new 2021 CPT code set, telemedicine and more
The CPT Editorial Panel has approved a unique CPT code for each of the coronavirus vaccines as well as administration codes unique to each vaccine. The new CPT codes clinically distinguish each coronavirus vaccine for better tracking, reporting and analysis that supports data-driven planning and allocation. Importantly, these CPT codes were made available prior to the public availability of the vaccines to facilitate updating of health care electronic systems.
For quick reference, the new Category I CPT codes and long descriptors for the vaccine products are:
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative free, 30 mcg/0.3mL dosage, diluent reconstituted, for intramuscular use
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (Coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, mRNA-LNP, spike protein, preservative free, 100 mcg/0.5mL dosage, for intramuscular use
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (coronavirus disease [COVID-19]) vaccine, DNA, spike protein, chimpanzee adenovirus Oxford 1 (ChAdOx1) vector, preservative free, 5x1010 viral particles/0.5mL dosage, for intramuscular use
More details on the specific administrative codes can be accessed on the AMA website.
The story of how telehealth has flourished during a public health emergency and insights about where digital health may go next were presented during “Coverage, Payment and Coding for Digital Medicine and Telehealth: The Present and Future,” an extended session at the recent AMA CPT® and RBRVS 2020 Annual Symposium. The rapid adoption of telehealth has been the “largest pilot study in the history of the universe,” said Ezequiel “Zeke” Silva III, MD, medical director of radiology for the Methodist Hospital Texsan in San Antonio.
The new 2021 CPT code set reflects the growth in new and novel areas of medicine, with the majority (63%) of new codes this year involving new technology services described in Category III CPT codes and the continued expansion of the Proprietary Laboratory Analyses (PLA) section of the CPT code set.
The AMA publishes educational resources to support your work with the CPT codes every year. The 2021 CPT® Professional guide book and other resources from past years are available online from www.eurospanbookstore.com/ama.
